The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

Is Meehan’s of Huntington just another pub grub hub or something more?

Still can’t decide. First time out, loved the crisp-frothy Guinness-battered shrimp, rich and hearty shepherd’s pie and homestyle beef and lamb stew. A bison burger was irresistible.

On a return visit, though, I ran up against thin oily fried crab cakes, unevenly heated “hot" spinach dip and a ho-hum Waldorf salad undermined by dry grilled chicken. But there was also a more than respectable Ruben sandwich and juicy bacon cheeseburger (both what you'd expect at a popular pub). Best of all was the restaurant’s signature meat loaf wrapped in bacon whose smoky flavor permeated every bite. Ah, bacon.
