Edgar Javier Viera, who cooked for 16 years at Maureen & Daughters' Kitchen in Smithtown, is doing a brisk business at his new Smithtown breakfast and lunch spot, Javiers Cafe. Open since June, the place much like Maureens serves only breakfast and lunch.
On a recent weekday morning, I encountered a 10-minute wait for a table. An omelet filled with lump crabmeat, tomato, fresh dill and Swiss came off as lush and harmonious, sharing the plate with very good home fries, served up dark and crusty. But banana blueberry pancakes ($8.25) were a dry, humdrum letdown.
Because the weather was iffy, the rear patio was closed. In nicer weather, eating at Javiers under an umbrella looks to be an appealing prospect.
