The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
Empanadas, those irresistible little Latin fried pies, have gotten really big — at least in terms of popularity.
They’re so big that Roy Pelaez, owner of Island Empanada in Ronkonkoma, not only operates a food truck (for special events and catered affairs), but just opened a new — and larger — branch in Medford.
The eatery, outfitted with leather booths and wood floors, formerly housed Lucky 13 Cafe. It offers the identical menu as the Ronkonkoma location and includes his signature ground beef sofrito empanada as well as barbecued chicken, Latin shrimp and chorizo-potato empanadas. They’re priced $2.50 to $3 each. You can also get rice and beans and/or sweet plantains ($2.99 small; $5.99 large) as side dishes.
Island Empanada is at 2040 Rte. 112, Medford, 631-307-9696.
