A few weeks ago, Lawson Pub in Oceanside was under 5 feet of water, half of its furniture floating down the street.
The restaurant is now up and running again, said chef-owner Joseph Bonacore, who had the foresight to stow his major electrical and mechanical equipment up on the roof before superstorm Sandy hit.
Getting the place in shape was undeniably rough work, said Bonacore, adding that without help from friends, family and crew members, he never could have pulled off a reopening so soon. “We ripped out all the sheet rock, put in new carpeting, floors and doors.”
Bonacore added that he’s still in the process of completing his store of silverware, glasses and plates. And the restaurant remains without working computers, so all checks are written by hand. But most of the menu is being offered, even if the new menu covers haven't come in yet.
The gastro pub received a three-star rating last November for Bonacore's vibrant cooking, at once classic and original. Past favorites include “little piggies,“ or wieners wrapped in pastry ($7.95), a Black Angus burger topped with bacon, Cheddar and lobster salad ($14.95) and a butternut squash salad with toasted pumpkin seeds ($10.95).
