The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

The new Lincoln Station Bar & Grill in Bellmore seems to be off to a fairly auspicious start. The handsome tavern, with old fashioned checkered cloths and leather banquettes, offers appealing prices — especially its $16.95 prix-fixe, available Sunday to Thursday nights.

With the exception of the thick-as-paste New England clam chowder ($6.95), the food made a generally positive impression. A three-course meal deal kicked off with a creditable Caesar salad, followed by a tender, savory marinated skirt steak with mashed potatoes which would have been ideal had they been hot. Next came a warm, moist brownie. Decent, although I'd have preferred a bit more chocolate intensity.

But a juicy, smoky burger, fully loaded with avocado, Cheddar and bacon ($11.95), was ideal, accompanied by skin-on wedges of hand-cut fried potatoes and coleslaw. What could be more essential, at a bar and grill, than a great burger?

Service was friendly, though food was slow in coming.

Lincoln Station Bar & Grill is at 216 Pettit Ave., Bellmore, 516- 785-5500.
