If wearing pajamas in public sounds like something you’d like to try on, Little Nook Cafe in West Sayville is the place to go on Fridays.
The new cafe hosts “Pajama Friday” every week, when full-on bedtime garb, pajama pants, or slippers scores free coffee and refills from 8 p.m. to close (3 a.m. seven days a week).
People who show up in pajamas number “in the dozens,” and sometimes more, said co-owner Nick Salinas. “Batman, Superman, onesies. You’d be surprised.”
Tucked next door to the West Sayville post office in what used to be Ella’s Market, Little Nook Cafe comes from Salina and business partner Pietra Gambino, who decided they wanted to open a cafe for night owls and the overnight shift.
“We wanted to offer a late-night alternative to the bar scene,” he said.
The cafe brews espresso and cappuccino from Sail Away Coffee Co. and offers a menu of waffles, pizza, panini and pastries from Mondello Italian American bakery in Bayport.
Vegans and the gluten-free have choices, too, such as goodies from Pride Enjoy Baking Co in Calverton. Prices range from $1.50 for a cupcake, $3 for brownies and $6 for waffles or French toast.
The interior is an eclectic narrative, from the vinyl album covers on the walls, a working fireplace, an upright piano and a trumpet collection, multiple TVs and a jukebox. Students from Sayville High School painted the colorful wall mural.
Little Nook Cafe is arranged more like a family room or rec center than a restaurant, with worn-in couches and chairs, foosball and pool tables, board games and books tucked in corners.
