The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

Rothmann's Steakhouse, of course, specializes in beef. But the local landmark is doing very well seaside, too.

It has joined steakhouses such as Blackstone in Melville and Insignia in Smithtown, balancing the red meat with sushi for a nouveau riff on surf-and-turf.

For traditionalists, however, there are a few more days remaining to enjoy the house's lobster special.

Maine lobsters are available for $18 per pound and served either steamed or broiled. At first, this may not seem like much of a deal. But they're usually $25.50 per pound. The steamed lobster is excellent. You may add $8 per pound if you want it stuffed with crabmeat. But no gilding is required.

Rothmann's offers some first-class sushi. A luxurious, special toro tasting, which includes two pieces of sashimi, two of nigirizushi, and a toro hand roll may be a special. The colorful rolls take in a "spicy trio," with salmon, tuna, yellowtail and Sriracha sauce, all capped with spicy tuna, scallion, roe and crab salad with seaweed. It sounds overorchestrated, but it's very good.
