Local Burger Co. has gone local in Bay Shore, broadening Long Island's burgeoning burger scene.
The place offers both table and counter service. Co-owner Mike McElwee said that it took about a year to build and features rustic barn wood and steel in its decor. Food and beverages are sourced from local purveyors, where possible. So, the beer comes from both Long Island and upstate breweries and the ice cream (also used in milk shakes) from Coyle's Homemade Ice Cream in Bay Shore. But, no, the beef isn't locally raised.
On the menu: hand-cut fries; beer-battered onion rings; a BBQ sundae served in a Mason jar featuring pulled pork, baked beans, coleslaw and a pickle; a chili cheese nitrate-free hot dog. And, of course, burgers, both simple and ornate.
Patties weigh in at four ounces and are routinely cooked medium to medium-well. Among the more unusual varieties: the Hipster, topped with fried bologna and American cheese, and the PB&B with peanut butter, bacon and cheddar. Vegetarians can opt for a quinoa burger. Nothing on the menu costs more than $10.
