Long Beach Sandwich Company, a new deli in the city’s West End, is raising the bar on sandwiches. “The food scene here is starting to grow up,” said owner Dan Monteforte, whose partners in the venture are his brother and father, both named Frank Monteforte. “We wanted to go back to what a deli was before there was Boar’s Head.”

Dan, the executive chef, believes that Long Beach’s center of culinary gravity is shifting west, citing the opening of such innovative eateries as Grotta di Fuoco (2014), Lost & Found (2015) and, earlier this month, the seafood-centric-small-plates-cocktail bar Lost At Sea.

While Monteforte still uses some Boar’s Head cold cuts, he roasts his own turkey, beef eye round and porchetta, and sources his bread from Tom Cat, among other bakeries.

“We’re focusing on creative sandwiches with specialty ingredients,” he said. Among his two dozen creations are the “pig and fig” featuring prosciutto, Asiago, fig jam, greens and balsamic reduction on ciabatta; the “ichiban” with teriyaki chicken, Pepper Jack cheese, greens and sesame aioli on an everything hero; the “gigi” with liverwurst, caramelized onions and honey mustard on marble rye.” Sandwiches range from $5.99 to $8.99.

Monteforte is also offering a menu of Southern California-style breakfast burritos ($4.99 to $5.99) that are available all day: The “Pacific beach” fills its flour tortillas with three eggs, sausage, hash browns, avocado, pico de gallo, melted cheese; the “Don Burrito” features three eggs, porchetta, salami, provolone, hash browns, pepper and onions. See the full menu on the deli’s Facebook page.

Long Beach Sandwich Company takes over the storefront that used to be C & C Deli. “The location has been a deli for as long as I can remember,” said Monteforte, who should know. The longtime Long Beach resident is also co-owner-pitmaster at Swingbellys BBQ, nine blocks west.
