Hoping to bring a little of their home state's hot dog tradition to Port Jefferson Station, Connecticut entrepreneurs Jonathan Gavern and Mark Argraves just launched Long Island Dogs in Port Jefferson Station. Anyone who has ever pulled off I-95 to Connecticut for a pit stop at Swanky Franks in Norwalk, Super Duper Weenie in Fairfield or Merritt Canteen in Bridgeport, knows just how serious our neighboring state is about their franks.
At Long Island Dogs, natural casing weiners, made in Connecticut, feature a combination of beef and pork. Instead of being grilled, they’re split and deep fried — and served on buns imported from Connecticut, as well.
On the hot dog roster are the top-it-yourself original ($2.75), the Long Islander crowned with sauerkraut, onion sauce, hot relish and mustard ($3.25) and the Windy City with sliced tomatoes, onions, relish and pickles ($3.25). There’s also a DMV burger with fried onion, mayo and American cheese ($3.95), a house-made veggie burger with lettuce, tomato, onions and spicy sauce ($4.95) and an Italian Stallion sausage and peppers hero ($7.25).
Milk shakes, in a variety of flavors, are made with Breyer’s ice cream.
With seating only at a few stools along a wall counter, Long Island Dogs is geared more to takeout than eating in.
