In this week’s Newsday, Joan Reminick starts the year off with a 3-star bang, reviewing Morning Rose Café in Bellmore. “Rose Tzanetos’ eponymous breakfast and lunch cafe has charm to spare,” she writes, “But you can't eat charm. What’s needed to make this adorable little storefront a culinary destination is a chef with skill and imagination. And Roberto Baez is just such a chef.” Reminick praises his hot chilaquiles, the warm and flaky Bubba biscuits and the Voodoo berry pancakes—tender, fluffy lemon poppy flapjacks with a mixed-berry compote and vanilla-scented whipped cream.

Erica Marcus visits Sangria 71, a popular new Spanish restaurant in the former Williston Park digs of Willy Parkers. Chef Reyes Lopez’s kitchen “sends out huge portions of well-priced, colorful food,” she writes. “Much of it is likable; little has soul."
