Having a dispute with Nassau County? If it brings you to Mineola, consider stopping for lunch at Mama Soup. Occupying half the ground floor of an office building across the street from the Nassau County government offices, the soup-centric eatery offers both eat-in (about 36 seats) and takeout.
The main event here is soup. A long, double-wide soup bar accommodates 28 different varieties of which we sampled four: Beef goulash was a winner, a slightly sweet stew of tender beef and fresh carrots served with noodles. Chicken potpie was also delicious, and cleverly served: After the creamy soup had been ladled into the carton, it was topped with a biscuit. I liked the firm farfalle that provided the noodles for the chicken soup, but I wish there had been a little more seasoning and more vegetables in the broth. Lentil soup seemed to have been seasoned by someone on a low-salt diet. Soup prices range from $3.99 to $6.49 per pint, $7.49 to $12.49 per quart.
Mama Soup also serves breakfast, sandwiches, wraps, salads, sweets and a few “barbeque” items including pulled pork, jerk chicken, ropa vieja and sloppy joes.
