Mara’s Too in Wantagh has closed. The spinoff of a Syosset restaurant, Mara’s Homemade, offered Southern fare and barbecue.
Smaller than the original, it opened in December 2013 and lasted about a year and a half.
“Unfortunately, though we were serving the same food as Mara’s, we were not getting the regular customers, like we do in Syosset,” said co-owner Mara Levi, adding that the Syosset restaurant will continue as before.
Meanwhile, Dennis Kaplan, a partner in Mara’s Too, has taken over the space and says he will reopen it on Friday as One Block East (which describes the Merrick Road eatery’s distance from the Wantagh Parkway).
Since the recipes from Mara’s Too are proprietary, the place, which Kaplan called a “New American gastropub with barbecue,” will have a repertoire all its own from executive chef Brian Chichester, who cooked at Mara’s Too. Expect lots of burgers and craft beers, too.
