The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

New to North Babylon is Maracas Southwest Grill, which makes its home in the Sunset Shopping Plaza on Deer Park Avenue. While owner Poli Arora doesn’t hail from the Southwest (he's actually from India), he said he's always liked Southwestern food. And the cook, he said, is from Mexico.

With its attractive tile work and neutral gray-beige palette, the counter-serve spot certainly has good looks going for it. Like so many eateries, it follows the format of national chain Chipotle Mexican Grill: you pick the protein, salsa, toppings you want to include in your taco, salad bowl, burrito, burrito bowl or quesadilla. Options include tofu ($6.99), fish, chorizo, carnitas, chicken and steak (at $7.99, the costliest).

Less predictable is the presence on the menu of pollo ala brasa, Peruvian-style rotisserie chicken. I ordered the chicken to go and found it to be lightly sauced and infused with a spice blend whose dominant flavor was paprika. Prices range from $6.99 for 1/4 chicken with two small sides to $37.99 for a family special that includes two whole chickens, four large sides, 8 biscuits and four sodas.

Maracas Southwest Grill is at 1142 Deer Park Ave., North Babylon, 631-940-8409
