The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
Last week I succumbed to the charms of small plates. I found myself at Opa Grille, the 2-month-old Greek restaurant that replaced Toast & Jamz in the H-Mart shopping center on Hillside Avenue in Williston Park.
The appetizer menu contained two of my favorite Greek starters, grilled octopus ($13.45) and the aromatic Greek sausage called loukaniko ($7.95), and so, in the manner of so many au courant chefs, I fashioned a meal with no main dish.
I suspect that someone in Opa’s kitchen may have small children because both the octopus and the sausage came precut, the former tossed with pieces of red onion, the latter sliced into coins. I can’t say I wouldn’t have preferred to cut my own meat: Neither of these presentations was terribly attractive, but they were tasty nonetheless — and generous.
Opa Grille has a friendly, bustling vibe and on a Friday night, the joint was jumping with takeout and dine-in customers. I look forward to coming back and working my way up to entrees.
