The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

The Homestead, an American restaurant that was an Oyster Bay mainstay for years, is back. It replaces Il Piatto, an Italian eatery that occupied the South Street address for almost six years.

The goal: "comfort food." Most main dishes at the reborn Homestead are less than $20. The new,  less -expensive menu includes assorted hamburgers and chicken wings, quesadillas, meat loaf, macaroni-and-cheese, steaks, salads and a few dishes in a different style, notably Gorgonzola-and-nut crusted pork chops and black-pepper-crusted tuna.

About a quarter of the menu from Il Piatto, which earned two stars, has been kept. The style is less formal. The busy bar, however, is the same. The Homestead is at 107 South St.., Oyster Bay; 516-922-9293.
