New in Oceanside is Phat Daddys Pub, occupying the former digs of Jonathan's, which was also an Irish pub. In fact, Phat Daddy's owner Michael Weiss said, the site has housed a bar since 1961.
This is one, though, that's serious about its food. A team of three chefs Theresa Wallach, Scott Boutiette and Robert Reed puts out a menu of pub-style specialties and just about everything is house-made.
This includes hand-cut fries ($5 as an appetizer), vegetable dumplings ($8) and a pulled pork platter with house-made cornbread ($13). A Phat Albert burger ($9) with secret sauce (optionally topped with bacon and cheese) is served on a brioche bun from a local bakery. It's accompanied by a mix of sweet and white potato fries and slaw. Dessert options include a brownie sundae ($9).
The place also features karaoke and a live music scene.
