The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.
The crushed tomato, fresh mozzarella and basil-topped "mama's old-fashioned" pizza at Sacramone’s Italian Restaurant in East Meadow made it into Newsday's "Pizza: 10 Long Island Pies Worth the Drive." If you want to dig into that coal-fired oven-baked pizza, you'd better get over to Sacramone's on Hempstead Turnpike before Aug. 15. That’s when the restaurant is slated to close.
According to brothers Anthony and Domenico Sacramone, there just wasn’t enough of a local customer base to support the business.
You will still be able to find the restaurant's pizza, as well as its house-made spinach ravioli (which family matriarch Maddalena Sacramone used to make weekly in East Meadow), linguine al vongole and San Gennaro-style sausage and peppers, at Sac’s Place in Astoria, which is also under the ownership of the Sacramone family.
Sacramone's is at 2366 Hempstead Tpke., East Meadow, 516-513-1919, sacramones.com
