Shock Ice Cream in Westhampton Beach has created the latest Instagram-worthy dessert with its carnival cone, an ice cream-cotton candy combo that looks like a scoop resting on a cloud.

“We stumbled upon it by accident,” said Elyse Richman, owner of the shop for the past 16 years. For 15 of those years, she’s had a cotton candy machine stored in the back of her shop until last week, when a friend suggested she bring it out and start using it. What child, or adult for that matter, doesn’t like cotton candy?

The eureka moment came when she hooked up the machine next to the soft-serve dispenser. Next thing you know, she was spinning a pouf of cotton candy, dropping a cone in the center, filling it with a swirl of ice cream and crowning it with toppings.

Customers can order the carnival cone with soft or hard ice cream and their choice of sprinkles, gummy worms, marshmallow and more for a unique dessert mash-up. Shock stocks more than 60 flavors of Hershey’s ice cream and dozens of toppings. Carnival cones start at $7.50.

“You can order any flavor,” says Richman, “but the more colorful it is, the more fun.”
