Hot off the grill: A new Smashburger has opened in New Hyde Park, joining existing locations in Hicksville, Port Washington and Wantagh.
The rule is that you order at the counter and get a number and your food will be brought to you. Burgers, which may only be had medium or very well done, are smashed and seasoned on the grill and served on “artisan” buns (egg, multigrain, spicy chipotle or brioche). While there are set options, you can also build your own burger, culling from a list of add-ons that even includes a fried egg.
The classic Smash ($5.29) features a beef burger topped with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, ketchup, onion and a mayonnaise-based “smash sauce” on an egg bun. A regional specialty is the New Yorker burger ($6.29) with New York Cheddar, garlic-grilled onions, spinach, tomato and peppercorn garlic aioli on a brioche bun. Shoestring Smash fries ($2.29) are tossed with rosemary and garlic. The menu also lists salads, shakes and malts made with Häagen-Dazs ice cream.
