Just added to the intriguing mix of Indian restaurants in Hicksville is Taste of Madras, serving a menu of Southern Indian specialties. The restaurant takes over the former Curry Club space.
Owner Raj Ram, who hails from Chennai, named some dishes you probably won’t find at most local restaurants. Under the menu heading of “extreme South Indian delicacy” are aapam, fluffy pancakes with egg ($7.95) served with sweetened coconut milk and chutney. Another unconventional offering is chicken kothu, finely chopped paratha, or flat bread, mixed with chicken, onion, pepper and spices ($11.95). There’s also nandu kuzambu, a fiery hot South Indian crab curry ($17.95) and kozhi khurma, South Indian country-style chicken with coconut sauce and spices ($14.95).
A full roster of biryani (rice dishes), dosa options (stuffed rice and lentil pancakes) as well as vegetarian, lamb, goat and chicken items round out the menu.
The restaurant serves a lunch buffet from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. ($9.95 weekdays, $11.95 weekends).
