The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene.

On a summery afternoon, the tables spill onto Main Street and the martinis overflow. The music is loud and the TV is tuned to the financial news. And, generally, the food is politely irrelevant.

In its latest life, 75 Main is mainly a gathering place to spend dollars and express concerns about euros. It is newly painted and polished and, for veterans of the neighborhood, a little incongruous.

So, consider the respectable cream of mushroom soup, which must be an August specialty somewhere; or the tastier chopped salad. Try the capellini with shrimp in a lemony sauce instead of the dry beef short-rib sandwich. You can veer toward veal Parmesan or a panino of grilled chicken, mozzarella and arugula.

But skip the routine desserts. After all, the gelati of Sant Ambroeus can be found across the street.
