Stango’s, a Glen Cove institution for 94 years, served its last pizza and plate of pasta under original ownership last night. For the time being, the place is closed.
Opened by Concetta and Frank Stango in 1919, Stango's has remained with the same family for nearly a century. The Stango's daughter, 96-year-old Stella Stango Cocchiola, and her sons, John and Gabe Cocchiola, managed to keep it alive for as long as the economy would allow.
John Cocchiola said that the new owners will keep the original name while giving the place a much-needed face-lift. Cocchiola said his family “will have a bit of a presence” and that his mother has plans to drop in from time to time once the place reopens. That should be within a few months.
