A live mariachi band christened opening night at The Cuban in Garden City on Monday, in the space that had been Puglia’s Garden City Cafe since 2011.
The Cuba-themed restaurant stands as the newest endeavor from Willy Martinez of Margarita’s Cafe in Wantagh, Hicksville and East Meadow, along with Greg Garofalo of Lobster Shack in Seaford.
The ambitious pan-Latin menu displays starters like crispy cod fritters; guacamole made tableside; Colombian chicken and potato soup, and roasted pork shoulder served with fried yucca and pickled onions. Empanadas and ceviches also make an appearance. Also expect classics, from the Cubano sandwich to ropa vieja — braised steak with tomatoes, peppers and onions. Prices range from $4.50 to $12.50 for starters, soup and salads and $16.50 to $29.50 for entrees.
Tropical fruits and rum dominate drinks such as mojitos and a Cuban mango rum punch while guava flan tempts among the half-dozen desserts ($6.50 to $7.50).
The Cuban is open from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays until midnight.
