Oaxaca Mexican Food Treasure
385 New York Ave. Huntington, NY 631-547-1232
Alex and Maria Gonzalez serve authentic homestyle Mexican food, a rarity in this part of the world. It is the kind of food you'd hope to get for dinner at a friend's house in Mexico, or, more specifically, the Mexican region of Oaxaca, where the Gonzalezes are from.
The tortilla soup, creamy and restorative, is a must for openers. Posole, a kind of soup-stew with pork and beans is accompanied by tostadas filled with ropa vieja (a softly shredded beef stew). Birra, a lamb stew, is utterly delicious.
The chicken with green sauce served here is addictive - grilled strips of juicy poultry with julienne zucchini topped with a piquant green tomatillo sauce. Fajitas Rio Bravo are what all the chain operations and fake Tex-Mex eateries are striving for. Burritos and sincronizadas (bean quesadillas) are all recommended.
For dessert, there's flan. But who needs dessert after such rewarding fare? --Joan Reminick
THE TACOS: Soft corn tortillas are crowned with cilantro, green salsa and scallions. Favorites include chorizo tacos, tacos al pastor, made with roasted spice-coated pork, and carnitas tacos with citrus-marinated pork. ($2.50 apiece or 3 for $9.50, served with rice and beans).Hours:
