“Fill ’er up.” That’s been the drill at Roslyn Car Care Center since it opened in 1980. But after 35 years of filling up gas tanks with Gulf, the request has acquired a new meaning: Last year, four taps were installed behind the cash register, enabling customers to drive away with a full tank and a 64-ounce “growler” bottle of fresh craft beer.
Neil Grimaldi, an enthusiastic home brewer, had always stocked the convenience store attached to the garage with a wide selection of specialty beers, the rare and the local. In 2014, he and his partner, Domenick Giammarusco, learned about The Growler Station, a California-based company that has installed state-of-the-art keg-tapping systems to more than 100 gas stations, convenience stores, supermarkets, liquor stores and hardware stores. It was a match made in heaven.
Grimaldi’s growler station takes up less space than a Lotto machine. The machine’s “counter-pressure fill” purges the empty bottle of oxygen, replacing it with CO2, which results in a fresher taste and a refrigerated shelf life of up to a month.
Right now, Grimaldi is tapping Braven Brewing Company’s White IPA, Thump Keg Brewing Co.’s Agave Amber Ale, River Horse Brewing Company’s Tripel Horse and Kona Brewing Company’s Pipeline Porter. New beers come on line every week or so and the lineup is always posted at beermenus.com. Prices range from $9.99 to $16.99 for 64 ounces.
Roslyn Car Care is good to know about if you need a special beer for a holiday party; it’s open seven days a week, 365 days a year, from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. (Sundays from noon).
