While most burger shops offer the opportunity to build your order as you see fit, Gourmet Burger Bistro turns patrons into chefs, giving some of the most unique and extravagant patty possibilities anywhere on the Island. Moving past the usual cheddar choice, the cheese toppings here veer into the territory of French bistros and Italian trattoriasoffering Gruyere Swiss, goat, brie and crumbled gorgonzola among more familiar selections of American and pepper jack. Ready to branch out past the usual splash of ketchup? Sauces like pesto aioli and cucumber yogurt lead a list of equally sharp and different options. The full menu is quite long, but keep in mind that guests even control the very base of their purchase as well, meaning one can swap chicken, turkey or veggie for the standard beef center.

"Our concept is simple ... be a steakhouse that's focused on the burger side," says Mike Napoli, owner of Gourmet Burger Bistro in Port Jefferson. Whether you order takeout or eat in, the build-a-burger options are creative and a worthy sideshow to the impressive fries.

Host Meredith Daniels ties on her "kiss the chef" apron and steps up to the grill to make one memorable patty.
