With dining spaces that range from a grand hotel ballroom-styled hall to a wine cellar room of brick, set with a long table and seemingly transported from some timeless European castle, the ambiance of Mamma Lombardi’s is regal and undeniably inviting. The menu, however, remains attitude-free, with Neapolitan edibles that aren’t rare or complicated — in fact, at times it’s as straightforward as your local pizzeria. Appetizers of baked clams, mozzarella sticks and various seafood salads are the antipasti, while spaghetti, linguine and orecchiette are among the pastas that come under garlic and oil or options of cream, tomato or white sauces. Beef, fish, veal and poultry are all available for entrées — prepared in Francaise, Marsala, Parmigiana and other popular Italian cooking fashions — and arrive with your choice of either pasta or salad.
Big, buoyant and full of generous, southern Italian cooking, Mamma Lombardi's is the first eatery in a mini-empire for dining out, catering and retail. And there definitely is a Mamma Lombardi. The sprawling restaurant's specialties include chicken-and-sausage campagnola with peppers, onions, mushrooms and potatoes; pork chops with vinegar peppers; pork braciola; tripe Neapolitan-style; lasagna with meat sauce; penne with spicy red sauce; octopus salad; mozzarella in carrozza. Very good pizzeria next door.
