A noteworthy series on American music

Music lovers, keep your Friday nights open this fall.

Sachem Public Library is hosting "America's Music: A Film History of Our Popular Music From Blues to Bluegrass to Broadway," a six-week series of documentary screenings. Each screening will be followed by a discussion led by Peter Winkler, a professor of music at Stony Brook University.

The series begins this Friday with blues and gospel as the subject. Upcoming sessions are Broadway and Tin Pan Alley (Sept. 27), swing jazz (Oct. 4), country and bluegrass (Oct. 18), rock and roll (Oct. 25) and Latin rhythms (Nov. 1). All sessions start at 7 p.m.
