Bank on new way to get gov't payments

With Election Day on Tuesday and the earliest possible Thanksgiving Day on Nov. 22, this month will go fast. December, as always, will fly by. Before you know it, it's the New Year -- with new rules for those receiving Social Security or other federal benefits on paper checks. So this is a good week to make some plans.

The federal government will stop issuing paper checks on March 1, when all benefit recipients must get their money electronically. For those with an account in a bank or a credit union, the government will put the money directly into that account. Those who don't have a bank account can set up a Direct Express account ( with the government. You will receive a Direct Express Debit MasterCard linked to the account. The money in the account is FDIC insured.
