Installing grab bars in the bathroom is a good place to start making your home senior friendly. About 50 percent of falls occur in the home, and the majority of those occur in the bathroom.

Lifetime Products, a maker of grab bars, says there are three prime locations where the products should be installed. The first two are obvious: in the bathtub and around the toilet. But the third may surprise you. The company advises replacing a towel rack with one that is also a grab bar. Lifetime notes that many seniors hold on to a towel rack while drying themselves, but a standard towel rack is not designed to withstand the weight of a person leaning on it.

Forget the notion that grab bars are always white and make your home look like a hospital. Modern grab bars come in a variety of finishes and fit in any decor.
