When a family member is diagnosed with Alzheimer's, the finding typically does not come as a shock. Often, the person with the disease has been showing slowly worsening symptoms for months or years.

A free workshop presented by the Alzheimer's Association can help families understand the ramifications of an Alzheimer's diagnosis and what treatments are available. For those who are worried they or a loved may one day suffer from dementia, the workshop will help you understand the risk factors and give you the knowledge to recognize the differences between dementia and a "senior moment."

"The Basics: Memory Loss, Dementia and Alzheimer's Disease" is Monday at 2 p.m. at Long Beach Library. To reserve a spot or for more information, call 516-432-7201.

Get the scoop on events, nightlife, day trips, family fun and things to do on Long Island.
