There was a time when our most sensitive documents were kept in a locked desk drawer or safe-deposit box, away from prying eyes. These days, details about our lives and finances often are unsafely stored on unlocked smartphones, tablets and computers, making it easier for a hacker or scam artist to steal not only your money but your identity.

You can learn how to avoid becoming a victim of identity theft at Cold Spring Harbor Library on Thursday. Suffolk County Police Department detectives assigned to the Identity Theft Section will offer tips to keep you and your data safe.

The free, two-hour workshop begins at 2 p.m. A question-and-answer period will follow. For more information, call 631-692-6820.
