Recollections of Freedom Summer

Hours before James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner were abducted and killed in Mississippi in the summer of 1964, Bernice Sims and her family hosted the young men who were part of the Freedom Summer movement for racial equality. Sims has written a book, “Detour Before Midnight,” about the friends she lost. (Credit: Newsday / J. Conrad Williams Jr.)
