Social Security just celebrated its 80th anniversary, but many Americans are still unaware of all the benefits they may be entitled to. For example, a new AARP survey found considerable confusion about spousal benefits, with only 25 percent correctly knowing that a divorced person can collect benefits based on an ex-spouse's work record if they were married for at least 10 years. Spousal benefits are also available for couples that remain married, even for a spouse who has no work record of his or her own.
If you're confused, a free workshop at Amityville Library may help. The workshop, which will cover a wide range of Social Security programs, will have an emphasis on spousal benefits.
The seminar is Thursday, Nov. 12, from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Call 631-264-0567 for more information.
