Falls are the No. 1 cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in seniors. With the bulk of an icy winter still to come, avoiding falls becomes harder and more crucial.

Suffolk County's first 2014 fall-prevention workshops begin next week. The free "Staying Independent for Life" program provides information and techniques that can help older adults reduce the risk of falls.

The first workshop is scheduled for 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Gurwin Jewish Assisted Living in Hauppauge. Call 631-853-6472 for more information and to reserve a spot.

Sayville Library is offering the same workshop on Jan. 14, 1-3 p.m. Call 631-589-4440.
