Tip: Suffolk deadline for STAR tax rebate

Suffolk homeowners have until March 1 to file for the STAR tax rebate. The School Tax Relief program returns a portion of a homeowner's local school tax.

The program has two parts. Basic STAR is available to all homeowners. Once you apply for Basic STAR, you don't have to reapply unless you've bought a new primary residence. Enhanced STAR, which returns a bigger chunk of taxes, is available only to homeowners 65 or older by Dec. 31, 2011, with 2009 income of $79,050 or less. Reapply each year for Enhanced STAR unless you sign up for Income Verification Program.

Suffolk residents must file the forms with their town assessor. For more information or to download forms, go to www.orps.state.ny.us/star/index.cfm. You can also call your town assessor's office. (The STAR deadline for Nassau County residents was Jan. 3.)
