Because falls are so prevalent among older seniors and the consequences are potentially deadly, Suffolk's Health Services Department is sponsoring several free workshops on fall prevention for Suffolk residents this month.

Stepping On, a comprehensive seven-week course, covers a range of fall-prevention strategies, including improving balance and strength. Space is typically limited at these classes.

There will be a Stepping On course at West Islip Library beginning Tuesday and running every Tuesday, 10 a.m.-noon, through Aug. 27. To register, call 631-661-7080.

A separate Stepping On begins Thursday at Martin Luther Terrace Apartments in Kings Park and runs every Thursday, 10 a.m.-noon, through Aug. 29. To register, call 631-544-0869, ext. 16.

For county residents who can't take the seven-week course, Suffolk is sponsoring Staying Independent for Life, a two-hour condensed version of the program at Copiague Library Friday, 10 a.m.-noon. Call 631-691-1111.
