Achieving a perfect special occasion look takes more than the right dress. Having your hair and makeup done by the professionals can give you that extra oomph to carry you through a night on the town. Here are three places in the Hudson Valley where you can get both your hair and makeup done before a special event.
Static Hair in White Plains
Servicing White Plains for 10 years, Static Hair is a must-visit salon in Westchester County (180 Mamaroneck Ave., White Plains; 914-997-2600; www.statichair.com). Decked out with video monitors, a water bar, a sitting lounge and spectacular lighting, this salon, which looks more like an artist's loft, specializes in haircuts (starting at $79), blowouts (from $45), keratin treatments (about $150) and special occasion updos (from $90).
Philip Faulkner, a stylist at Static Hair, says high ponytails, hair ornaments and pompadours are big this season. He gave us a side-swept bun decorated with a sparkly hair clip, the perfect start to a party pretty look.
Freelance makeup artist J. Guerra, who's based out of Mamaroneck, recently worked New York and Paris fashion weeks. He's also glammed up celebrity clients, including Bethenny Frankel of Bravo fame and Daymond John of "Shark Tank." We caught up with him at Static Hair, where he applied an oxblood lip and smudged, shimmery smoky eye, which complemented the modern updo ($150 for an in-home visit; www.j-guerra.com).
Salon Verve in Hopewell Junction
Salon Verve is a full-service salon that specializes in hair color, blowouts and updos, among other services (800 Rte. 82, Hopewell Junction; 845-447-1042; www.salonverveny.com).
Owner Jennifer Italiano, who has worked in the industry for more than 20 years, says ombre highlights ($120-$150), low side-swept ponytails (about $75 for an updo) and blowouts with a slight wave are all popular this season.
In addition to hair services, Salon Verve also offers waxing and full bridal services, including special occasion makeup by freelance makeup artist, Jenny Greene-Magliano, an artist who has had the likes of Mario Lopez and Chris Brown in her chair ($75 for holiday makeup application, $25 for false lashes; makeupbyjenny.com). For a modern look, she recommends a smokey eye and light lips or a deep red lip and light eyes to complete that party ensemble.
Vogue Salon in Nanuet
Vogue Salon is a full-service salon that offers everything from airbrush makeup application and bridal services to waxing and spray tanning (78 S. Middleton Rd., Nanuet; 845-623-1145; voguesalon.net). Priding itself on being a salon that furthers the education of its stylists, Vogue offers So. Cap. extensions (starting at $500), haircuts ($55-$70) and formal styling (from $65).
This season, manager Meghan Yannon sees a trend in soft, romantic curls (starting at $45) and tousled side buns ($65-$85).
Believing one's budget shouldn't dictate his or her access to beauty, Vogue offers an affordable alternative of its hair services by way of its trained intern stylist. Haircuts ($40), color ($55), highlights ($100) and blowouts ($25) are all offered at reduced rates.
