Thankfully, there’s a trend on the rise that strips down the wedding cake of its exterior, called the "naked" cake.
It may sound odd, but when a wedding cakes goes without frosting and shows layers of the cake itself, separated by your choice of filling, the natural beauty really shows. Without that final coat of icing, you open up tons of possibilities that may be geared more toward the overall feel of your wedding. Creating a cake that shows its fillings can also set the overall tone of your day. The mastermind behind the "naked" cake trend is Christina Tosi, chef and owner of Momofuku Milk Bar, who chooses to uncover all the fun details of a wedding cake instead of covering them up with frosting. When asked why brides are jumping on board with the "naked" wedding cake trend, Tosi said that “brides are taking new and creative approaches to every part of their wedding. A traditional cake wrapped in fondant or buttercream is being challenged by cakes that have fun, creative flavors and textures inside that peek out of the perimeter of the cake.”
If you’re an unconventional bride who craves a cake just as unique as you are, Tosi suggests “playing around with color and texture of the cake, as well as the flavor profile -- passion fruit, mint, marshmallows -- where previously the color of a cake was purely through food coloring.” The "naked" cake is perfect for a couple who doesn’t want ho-hum chocolate or vanilla, and for those who think outside of the box!
If you think a "naked" cake is right for you, there are a few things you should know. “’Naked’ wedding cakes are not for the faint of heart! They make a colorful statement, and get people excited about dessert. It’s all about the flavor and the layers of cake itself,” Tosi says. “They draw the eye in and don’t need much additional décor to make a statement.”
