Life on Long Island
Artworks group art show at Sip This
About a year ago, a couple of hip-minded bars changed the idea of what Long Islanders could expect from a local tavern with similar-yet-unique promotions: art shows.
It was The Cortland in Bay Shore and The Leaky Lifeboat in Seaford that started the mini-movement toward upping the ante of what kind of events one could find on the Island -- giving local artists a place to introduce themselves and possibly sell their work via dedicated events. And come Friday, June 15, another unusual, forward-thinking hangout will join the drive to invigorate the local creative landscape.
Arriving in Valley Stream during the summer of 2011, Sip This – while not a bar but a coffeehouse – became a member of the growing fraternity of L.I. hipster hangouts by offering a calendar of clever promotions of its own. The latest from Sip will be “Artworks,” and from 7 p.m.-10 p.m. the occasion will feature a bevy of eye-catching attractions (with music and complimentary refreshments provided). Such media as sculpture, photography and painting will be represented – all the creations of New York-area artists.
The show will continue until July 6, so even if an appearance at the inaugural Friday isn’t feasible, the public can come by anytime and investigate. As with shows elsewhere, the efforts will be for sale -- but keep in mind everything must stay put until the aforementioned closing date (with all sales going directly to the artist whose piece has been purchased).
