Life on Long Island
Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl for CF
As the winter holidays fast approach, many will ornament their homes, schools and offices with jolly colors, joyous displays and heartwarming decor that inspire long looks and good feelings.
On the other hand…some people will also adorn themselves, employing an article of clothing that, while truly festive, is not exactly the most dapper of outerwear: the “ugly” holiday sweater.
These often-prickly, garish jumpers tend to blend clashing patterns involving animals, snowflakes and other seasonal depictions – frequently in hues of bold red, forest green, gold and white – all adding up to a piece of garb that was once the dread of the December fashion scene.
However, over the past decade these uncomfortable, loud pullovers have seen a transformation from gaudy fashion misses to in-demand merrymaking necessities as now -- toward the end of every year -- a number of bars, clubs, restaurants and other establishments have taken to hosting “Ugly Sweater Parties,” where guests are asked to wear their woolen holiday worst while in attendance. And in a bold – and likely itchy – move, the Young Professionals Groups of both the Huntington and Melville Chambers of Commerce have gone even further, organizing an “Ugly Sweater Pub Crawl” for Saturday, Dec. 1.
Starting at noon, all who wish to take part are to don their creepiest, mismatched, toasty tops and then bounce between four different Huntington Village spots: Nag's Head Ale House (from noon-1:30 p.m.), Christopher's (1:30 p.m.-2:45 p.m.), XO Restaurant & Chocolate Lounge (2:45 p.m.-4 p.m.) and Rookies Sports Club (4 p.m.-until you leave). There is a $20 donation to participate, with the proceeds to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and those who take part in the crawl score a commemorative beer mug and drink specials along the way.
