Long Island employment for January 2014

Here are the figures for non-farm employment measured by the state Department of Labor for January. The figures – in thousands, rounded to the nearest hundred – are preliminary and subject to revision. They are also not seasonally adjusted, which is why January 2014 is best compared to January 2013.

The table includes lines for the three large sectors (goods producing, service providing and government), as well as subcategories within those sectors and some of the larger industries within those subcategories, so there is some overlap. For example, the “Trade, Transportation and Utilities” subcategory under service providing gives a separate breakdown for wholesale trade, which itself is broken down into wholesalers for durable and non-durable goods. There is no overlap in the chart, which you can click on to get the number of jobs in the industries shown. You can also click on the subcategories in the chart legend and hit the icon in the upper right to isolate just one category at a time.
