My wife and I are avid supporters of cloth diapers — so much so that our 1-year-old son has worn them exclusively since he was about two weeks old. When other parents ask us if cloth diapering is difficult, we emphatically answer: “No.”

It turns out we’re not alone in that opinion.

DiaperShops.com, a Maine-based cloth diapering resource, released the results of its 2nd Annual Cloth Diapering Pulse Survey this month. The survey found that 72 percent of respondents were “most surprised at how easy cloth diapering is,” the service said in a statement. The rest of the survey results provide some telling statistics about cloth diaper usage.

A little more than half of respondents said they exclusively use cloth diapers. Slightly less than a third of parents said they have never used a disposable diaper. The results seem to illustrate that many cloth diaper parents use a mix of cloth and disposables.

The survey found that the most popular cloth diaper brand is bumGenius, followed by FuzziBunz. (My personal favorite is Rumparooz.) Pockets and snaps are more popular than Velcro-style diapers, the results state.

Cloth diaper families tend to start earlier, as 68 percent of users said they decided to use cloth during or before pregnancy. The number one reason respondents choose cloth diapers is to “save money,” the results state, as 53 percent of users chose that are their primary concern.

Interestingly, cloth diaper families also have a tendency to overbuy. Nearly half of respondents said they own more than 25 cloth diapers, although manufacturers recommend purchasing about 20.

Bobbi-Jean Palmer, owner of DiaperShops.com, said the survey’s goal was to “provide relevant stats and information about cloth diapering users to the industry in order to better serve our customers.”
