Long Island kids turn 12 on 12-12-12

Bryce Grathwohl, an 11-year-old from the Mattituck-Cutchogue school

Bryce Grathwohl, an 11-year-old from the Mattituck-Cutchogue school district, is turning 12 on 12-12-12. To celebrate his birthday he is taking 12 of his friends bowling on the weekend. On his actual birthday, he is bringing 12 treat bags (each with 12 pieces of candy) to school to use as prizes for classmates who answer 12 questions correctly. (Credit: Handout)

Courtney Biernick, an 11-year-old from East Northport loves the number 12. Her street address starts with 12, her basketball jersey number is 12 and she's also turning 12 on 12-12-12.

Although Wednesday is a normal "hump" day for most people, some 11-year-olds will be celebrating a very special birthday.

Turning 12 on 12-12-12 is quite a rarity and won't happen again for another 100 years. Some Long Island tweens are excited about the "coolness" factor of this special day.

Here's what some kids think about celebrating their 12th birthday on 12-12-12:

*Natalia Mahoney, an 11-year-old from Locust Valley Middle School can see herself when she's a mom pulling out the newspaper and saying: "'Look, that's when I turned 12 on 12-12-12' and my children will be so excited. I'm also the only one in my entire family that has a birthday like this," she said.

*Matthew McCaffery, an 11-year-old from Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale will be playing in his basketball team's game on his 12th birthday but will celebrate with friends and family over the weekend.

*Kyrie Lawson, an 11-year-old from West Babylon said:  "My birthday is special to me because I'm the only student in my school turning 12 on this date. Since it's so close to Christmas I get a double dose of presents in one month!"

*Jenna Aluska, an 11-year-old from Lindenhurst was born at 12:21 a.m. on 12-12-12. "I love my birthday because I love going to Manhattan in the winter to see all the flashing lights, go ice skating with my friends, drinking hot chocolate and playing in the snow," she said.
