Jacob tops the list for the 14th straight

Jacob tops the list for the 14th straight year while Sophia is the most popular name for girls.

Sophia and Jacob top the new list of the most popular baby names in 2012. This is the 14th year in a row Jacob tops the list for boys and the second year for Sophia, according to the list recently released by the Social Security Administration.

"There is a new couple in the top 10 this year -- Elizabeth and Liam replace Chloe and Daniel," according to the news release. This is the first time Liam broke into the top 10, once again influenced by pop culture, perhaps attributed to Liam Neeson’s recent major roles in “Battleship," “Taken,” “The Chronicles of Narnia” and “Clash of the Titans."

Along with Sophia, rounding out the top five girl names: Emma, Isabella, Olivia and Ava. Top five boy names along with Jacob are Mason, Ethan, Noah and William.

There were also many surprising additions to the Social Security Administration list. As pop culture naming trends continue, this year's winners for biggest jump in popularity in the Top 500 are Major for boys, which parents may associate with the military title and is a tribute to members of the U.S. military, and Arya for girls, which may be influenced with HBO's "Game of Thrones," according to the news release. Arya is the daughter of a leader of one of the Seven Kingdoms who is an expert sword fighter.

The Social Security Administration release also mentioned the second-fastest riser for boys was Gael, and for girls, Perla. "Both names most likely are on the rise due to the increase in the Spanish-speaking population in the U.S. Perla is the Latinized version of Pearl and Gael's popularity could be tied to the Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal."
