Weekend family fun on Long Island: Harlem Globetrotters, magic lessons, circus and more
Looking for things to do with the kids this weekend? From magic lessons and a circus performance to the Harlem Globetrotters and more, there's much to do on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for fun, family-friendly activities this weekend:
1. FreckleFace Strawberry at BroadHollow's BayWay Arts Center (265 E. Main St., East Islip). On Saturday at 2 p.m., enjoy a musical based on Julianne Moore's children's book of the same name, in which a girl with bright, red hair and freckles learns to accept herself. Price: $12, $10 in advance.
3. Circo Comedia at Van Nostrand Theatre at Suffolk County Community College (Crooked Hill Road, Brentwood). Join Jean Saucier, a juggler, acrobat, trick cyclist and magician from the Quebec Circus, as he performs along with Patrick Cote, a burlesque clown, expert roller skater and drummer on Saturday at 3 p.m. Price: $15.
4. Great Grandma's Kitchen at Connetquot River State Park Preserve (Sunrise Highway, Oakdale). Discover a kitchen from the 1800s and learn about different cooking techniques with hands-on demonstrations using gadgets like swizzle sticks and cherry stoners on Saturday from 2-4 p.m. Price: $4, $3 children ages 3 and up; reservations are required.
5. Harlem Globetrotters at Nassau Coliseum (1255 Hempstead Tpke., Hempstead). On Sunday at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., kids and adults alike can watch the Harlem Globetrotters perform live. Price: $15-$179, plus a parking fee.
