Dafny Irizarry, the sometimes controversial former chairwoman of the Suffolk Community College board of trustees, is resigning her trustee post, according to college sources.

Irizarry, who was appointed by the county legislature in 2010, is leaving the unpaid post nearly two years before her term expires. Irizarry, a high school language teacher, could not be reached for comment, but college sources say she plans to go to law school.

Irizarry, who served four years as board chairwoman, voluntarily did not run for another one-year term last year after the board approved resolutions indicating there was “reasonable cause” to believe she violated confidentiality in connection with a violation of the college sexual harassment policy. At the time, she acknowledged her tenure “was not free of conflict” but said she always remained “transparent’ in her dealings.

Legislative sources say Christopher Murray, a lawyer from Stony Brook, has surfaced as a potential replacement.
