A St. James woman was arrested and her infant son rescued from their overheated car in a Levittown parking lot after she used heroin in the vehicle and passed out with the windows closed, police said.

Nassau County police said the infant, whose age was not immediately known, was "sweating profusely" in the hot interior of the 2013 Dodge Dart on Monday afternoon and was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment of heat exhaustion. The child was held overnight for observation.

The woman, identified by police as Jessica Rosengart of 176 Tredwell Ave. was semiconscious at 2:30 p.m. when responding Second Precinct officers got to the parking lot on Hempstead Turnpike. Police said the woman, who was described by police as "passed out and severely sweating," opened a car door after officers "repeatedly knocked on the window."

Officers found a hypodermic needle and three glassine bags containing heroin, police said.

According to the National Weather Service, the temperature in nearby Farmingdale was about 82 degrees at the time of the incident, with 67 percent humidity -- making it feel like 87 degrees.

Police said Rosengart also violated an order of protection against her Monday that barred her from having unsupervised contact with her son.
