14 charged with child care fraud in Rockland

Fourteen people are accused of cheating Rockland County out of more than $229,000 in child care funds since 2007, leaving hundreds of needy families waiting in line to receive help, officials said. The suspects, ranging in age from 25 to 42, used clever ways to scoop up the funds from the Rockland County Department of Social Services, said Rockland County District Attorney Thomas Zugibe, including lying about income and residency. Twelve of the suspects have been arraigned, and three already have pleaded guilty, Zugibe said. Law enforcement officials are still working to track down the remaining two. (April 25, 2013)
